Contentment and Hope
The Past and The Future

What is a state of mind or consciousness?

If we understand the question, by means of subjective reference or reflection,
which is the very capacity of consciousness,
how consciousness situates
at the point of tension between stasis and flow,
we can see how our posture of consciousness
affects the experience we have in our mind or consciousness.
We hold questions in our minds,
questions which constitute the content of our attention:

What is happening?

Where am I?

Even these two seemingly common questions can be a multitude of questions. What is happening for the sake of what commitment?
Are we wanting to determine a reaction? some possibilities?
perhaps we want to select a scale of events or a location for our attention.
What is happening with respect to what field of view? in the room?
in the building? in the community? in the nation or world?
in the universe?
in someone’s mind?
in someone’s body? in someone’s hands?

Such questions have a character which creates the posture of consciousness. What description, in what kinds of terms,
will my subjected perception allow as an answer?
Our questions are never fully stated.
Our perception is determined by a relativistic consideration.
What we consider ourselves to be, what we consider to be real or possible,
affects the nature of the question.

I am not only posing that we create our own experience,
that we create our own reality or realities,
but that we attract to us those with whom we do this creating
by means of our attitudes, thoughts and emotions.

Finally, at the end of life, in 1984, Jane Roberts abandoned
both religion and science as cultures which pursued objectivity and dualism,
the separateness of the self from all else,
whether the separateness of the self from God or physical reality.
I first said, a long time ago, nearly twenty years ago,
there is no darkness, only blindness.
Dualism believes in the object-like separateness of things, even the self.
Both religion and science practice dualism.

Dualism is a part of the practice of analysis.
Analysis seeks to know by means of taking things apart,
things which it already regards as separate or apart from any whole or totality.
Analysis uses representation to manipulate and the objects
as a means of knowing.
It is a common form of thinking.
It is a form of thinking which creates a blindness
to the connections which exist between everything,
between who and what we are and everything and everyone else.
Science, in its best form, has a kind of integrity
which produced quantum mechanics and relativity.
These two scientific undertakings both preclude sustained disregard
for the connection of observers to what they observe.

If science and religion meet, it is beyond the bounds of both.
It is in the domain of subjectivity.
It is in the domain where the observer affects what he observes
by means of his connection with what he may only regard
as something able to be observed
by means of a critically suspended connection,
a connection never lost, never forgotten, never ignored,
never disregarded, always blended into his perceptions
which are made without any finality or absoluteness.
